There are an almost infinite number of ways that
book designers have formatted chapter headings. The main thing is
to keep it simple. Often a heading at 16-18pt in the same
font as the body text is as much as is needed. The purpose of typography
is after all to help convey the meaning of the text, not to show
off the book designer's art. You do not want the reader to stop
reading to admire the design, still less to be offended by a piece
of bizarre typography.
